Free Your Mind
Transworld
2003, 40 minutes
Current Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Free Your Mind focuses on three skaters, Dan Drehobl, Rob Welsh, and Darrell Stanton, and pulls them together with numerous skits involving cab rides and interactions with men that live on the street. The video focuses mainly on street skating with some vert work from Drehobl thrown in as well.

I'm still waiting for Transworld to work out how to film. In Free Your Mind, they go to extremes for sure. The intro and some of the montage work tries to get a little artsy (I've seen too many shots of bridges and birds in slo-mo already, thank you), while the remainder of the filming lacks any motion. The stationary camera would be fine if it actually focused in on the individual skaters, but it doesn't. It's okay if you're setting up a camera and just filming yourself, but come on, this is Transworld. I'm sure they can handle moving the camera a bit. Drehobl's part more than makes up for any problems. It's amazing from start to finish and leaves you thirsting for more. Unfortunately, the video involves sitting through (or fast-forwarding through) all of the horrible cab skits to get to the next skater. Darrell's part is fairly standard but still good and Rob's part is one of the few where I actually appreciate the insertion of a guest skater. Normally, it irritates me to see another skater get so much time during someone else's spot, but here it provides a nice break from Welsh's straight-legged landings that nearly pull him to a complete stop every time. FYM is a pleasure to watch in parts but not one to own.
