Issue #47
411 VM
2001, 52 minutes
Current Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

411 VM #47 compiles several short segments, including a day in the life of Steve Caballero, footage of skating in such locations as Costa Rica, Spain, France, and Hawaii, a segment on James Craig which focuses on his repeated leg injuries and his working through the ordeal, and a feature on skater Bryan London. The music varies from section to section and is assembled together with similar visual imagery and long commercial breaks (like any video magazine).

A warning: it's hard for me to rate this without bashing video magazines in general. I'll try my best to avoid talking about the excessive commercials or the lack of real structure, though, and focus on the segments included. The Chaos montage which directly follows the laundry list of segments spouted at the beginning is amazing (nice to see Creager who I kind of forgot about) and preps you for a great video. Unfortunately, after that point, nothing much stands up to that level. Caballero's section is dull to me to say the least and the Costa Rica segment is so short it might as well be excised from the video. Near the end, London's section and the footage from Hawaii help to make up for it, but nothing ever reaches the level with which the video starts. It's a disappointment to get your hopes up and then have to sit through mediocrity, but such is life.
