Current Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Love Child is World Industries’ video from 92. The video features their stellar team of young street skaters, has the last of the legendary Randy Colvin footage and Daewon Song’s first video part. Many other big names get their start here including Shiloh Greathouse, Spencer Fujimoto, Chico Brenes and the eternal am, Daniel Castillo. A particularly fresh aspect of the vid is that it gives us Jovontae Turner’s only full part aside from Planet Earth’s Now N Later. The whole thing is set to classic jams from the 60’s and 70’s and contains lots of early technical skating at EMB and other familiar street spots. The closing montage, set to Ray Charles, with footage from their tour is really funny and highlights some of the better tricks from the video in slow-mo.

Love Child set the standard for the straight up street vids of the early to mid-nineties and is one of my all time favorites. You get to see the superstars of today when they’re frighteningly young, and catch final glimpses of Colvin, the world’s greatest mongo footer. Jed Walters rips it and does one of the illest kickflips ever at the 3rd St. gap in Santa Monica, caught very clean for 92. Jovontae’s style is probably the nicest ever. He hits ridiculous manual and nose manual tricks and some hot switch FS pressure flips, not to mention 360 flips that rival Jason Lee’s, which are hard to pull off wearing those yellow Airwalk NTS’s. Seeing Daewon’s mad manual combos and flippy ledge tricks explains where he’s at today. The crazy thing in this video is just how stylish everyone is. Although the pants get pretty large, there are no toes dragging or sketchy footage, which is unusual for the era. Dude, so good.
