Guilty
Shorty's
2001, 37 minutes
Current Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Guilty explores the challenging idiom of the cinematic skateboarding video with a storyline in which the Shorty's team is convicted of various crimes and sentenced to death. Mixed in between the story is each skater’s stab at the spotlight. As one may expect, the film features a hip-hop soundtrack.

Guilty features everything you might expect from one of the most tasteless and gimmick-dependent teams in skateboarding: the tiresome gangster storyline, the macho posturing, the guns, and the musically challenged Muska. Wow, where to start with this one... The worst feature has to be the editing: bad angles and schizophrenic flow make Guilty terrible to watch. Still, I must confess, there are some decent moments, mainly Brandon Turner's switch hardflip over the Carlsbad gap. Also, I must mention Smolik's picnic table nosegrind to nollie heelflip backside big spin out. Of course, the Muska is the Muska. If you’re a fan, you'll probably enjoy his section. Personally, I find his popularity baffling. Expect 15 tail slides and a few flip tricks. The bottom line: Guilty will come in handy when you run out of toilet paper.

Guilty had such potential. I bet if JUST the skating was in the video, it would be great. Instead, we get ridiculous skits that even my easily-amused ass has trouble laughing at. The video starts off with the Shorty's team being sent to prison by some judge. On the way to jail, the van gets jacked, the security guards get killed and the team is set free. What a RAD concept! Not really. The skating is great, as you would expect from these kids. Brandon Turner has excellent style and Smolik does some teched out stuff, but overall it's not quite as impressive as Fulfill The Dream. The problem with this vid is partly due to the over-usage of random editing crap that is strewn about the video. Pictures from ads are flash-framed into people's parts and there are annoying flashes of text and clips where the editor chopped up the footage. It ruins the video. The best/worst part is Lil-B's rapping. You read right, Brandon Turner raps his own part. With lines like "I broke my leg" followed by "I'm an indestructible skateboarder," Lil-B doesn't disappoint... if you're looking for humor. Unfortunately I think he was serious. I am sorry B. Please stick to skating. One love.
