Current Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

In Bloom is Transworld's 13th skate video, which features six up-and-coming talents. The skating is mostly street and park footage, but features a good amount of pools too. Each section is introduced by a large name in the industry who's familiar with the skater. The video pretty closely follows an intro-part-montage pattern with a Transworld-true rock, electronica and rap soundtrack.

Anyone who's familiar with Transworld's work knows what to expect from them by now. So don't go hoping for something different, because this one fits into the same mold they've been using. The video is done in the usual half-documentary, half-skate video style. Each skater is discussed by big names like Jamie Thomas and Eric Koston, but this doesn't mean these intros are boring or repetitive. Each one gives a unique reflection of the skater, some funny, others philosophical. In terms of skating, Evan Hernandez's part seems to wane with hammer after hammer. On the other hand, Tony Trujillo's part is just what the doctor ordered to get you psyched to skate. That man has no fear, endless style, and a trick for every spot. Even though these two parts represent the best and the worst, they don't entirely overshadow other parts, such as Chris Cole’s, which contains some rewind-and-lemme-see-that-again tricks and Alex Gall's. Also be prepared for the return of a bails section that is not for the squeamish and many familiar faces in the various nicely composed montages. More or less, this video is nothing spectacularly ground breaking, but nothing to scoff at either.

I'm going to come across in the beginning here as completely negative, but oh well, deal with it. Transworld is too commercial to really capture skating at its best. No matter how great a part is, they always find some way to throw off the pace of a video or over-produce a segment (generally, it's all in their editing) and it leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth. So the question is why in the world do I own this video if I have such disdain for Transworld? Because despite all of the possible problems, a section like Chris Cole's is going to be what I remember after I'm done bitching about how the magazines and the videos just aren't as great as another. It's going to be what makes me grab for my board in the middle of the video. Transworld may not capture the entirety of what makes skateboarding so appealing, but you have to admit that they aren't lacking in their photographic skills. In Bloom may inspire some nagging on my part, but it all turns out well in the end. I rank this video above any other Transworld production mainly because of its emphasis on up and coming skaters as well as some great clips of several established guest skaters.
