Europe 1998
411 VM
1998, 60 minutes
Current Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
With an amazingly self-explanatory title, Europe 1998 is a documentary of the 1998 European summer contest series in Prague, Lausanne, Montpellier and Munster. The formula goes something like street qualifying, vert finals, street finals, and next contest. There’s also a section on the Marseille park and some footage of kart racing thrown in. The music is pretty much like that of every other 411 production, with a mix of punk, indie, and hip-hop.

With it being the middle of the winter, freezing cold, and snowing all too often right now, I’ve been logging some serious skate video hours recently. Europe ’98 is probably the video I’ve watched the most times over the past few weeks. There’s something about park footage that makes it more fun to watch than most street footage. I think it’s the up one ramp, down another flow of all the pyramids, banks, and quarter pipes, as opposed to the rail after rail after rail in most modern videos. Another thing this video has going for it is that since it’s a 411 and because it covers the Europe contests, it’s got at least a trick or two from almost every popular skater at the time. You’re probably going to want to fast-forward through the go-kart section, but everything else about this video is great.
