Dogtown & Z-Boys

2001, 91 minutes
Current Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Sean Penn (a.k.a Jeff Spicoli) narrates this Stacy Peralta-directed documentary about the Dogtown and Zephyr Boys' surf and skate exploits in Venice, California. From waves beneath the dilapidated Venice pier to the concrete waves of drought-emptied pools, Dogtown & Z-Boys sheds light on the origins of modern skateboarding using interviews and historical footage from the men and women who made the scene.

This movie is a great history lesson for those of us who weren't there when it all went down. A handful of dedicated misfits turned society's refuse (empty pools) into a canvas on which to paint their unique experiences with brushes of urethane and paint of sweat. Sound lofty? Perhaps. For real though, this is a movie more kids should check out, if not for the history, then for the style. Too many skaters have no sense of style these days. The Z-Boys not only had the tricks, they also looked good doing them. That's what made them the best team of their era and that's why this movie exists in the first place. People remember them for and were in awe of their style. All hail Tony Alva, Jay Adams and the rest of the Z-Boys! Modern skateboarding owes them everything.
