Chomp on This
2002, 60 minutes
Current Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

It’s good to see some things from more than one perspective now and then. For example, you never really get to see if those slightly over-weight, foul-mouthed filmers can really rip. Well, here's your chance. With support from such heavyweights as Jamie Thomas and Eric Koston, several top-notch cinematographers try their hand on the other side of the camera. Filmed by the skaters, and skated by the filmers, Chomp On This is all about fun, innovation and keepin' it real.

If you have ever wondered how good filmers can get at skating, Chomp On This does more than just answer your question. I was fully surprised at how good some of the filmers really are, especially Gabe Morford. Right around the time Chomp came out I saw a Morford board from Real at the skate shop and thought, "I swear that guy is a filmer!" Most of the filmers featured in Chomp are better than I expected of any camera jockey. A few pros also make cameo parts such as Eric Koston, Jamie Thomas and a few others sprinkled here and there. The video sort of gives the feel of a Tiltmode video in the way that it’s just for shits, giggles, and all around good times, which is why I like it. It’s also worth it just to see Koston drunk and punk.

In the world of the Chomp, five stairs are big, technical tricks are rare, and toe drag is commonplace, but it’s ridiculously fun to watch the people behind the lens rip it up. Actually, the photo geeks aren’t too shabby, especially Morford, who had the best part by far. On the non-filming tip, Jamie Thomas and Eric Koston bring home the fatback with step-off kickflips over a picnic bench and step-off 5-0 grinds. Chomp breaks the mold of today's skate videos by making fun and screwing off a priority over selling products and one upping the next guy on the played-out rail. It just reminds me of why we all starting skating: to have fun.
