Round 2: Rodney Mullen vs. Daewon Song
World Industries
1999, 34 minutes
Current Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

In this much awaited, much-anticipated sequel to Round 1, both Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song show us their best. Throughout the course of the video Mullen flips out of k-grinds to melodic piano, Creager flips out of slides to Indie-rap, and JB Gillet performs to French hip-hop. Be prepared for k-grinds, manuals, and bluntslides ad nauseum, but also be prepared for an exceptionally diverse group of skaters, from the McBrides to Enrique Lorenzo, from Sluggo to Dave Mayhew, and from Mark Johnson to Marcus Romero.

The biggest mistake I made during the first few times I watched Round 2, was only watching the parts from Mullen and Song, which are so impressive that they can underscore the rest of the video. After seeing Daewon kickflip and 360 flip into bluntslides down tables and Rodney varial heelflip out of k-grinds, everything else seemed black and white, while they remained in full color. However, upon further inspection, this video as a whole makes its mark as one of the best ever. Even Enrique Lorenzo, who was only an amateur at the time, can stun you at times with his unique style and impressive repertoire of cross-genre tricks. Aside from camera work that makes you feel as though you’re on a beach in Normandy (during a portion of the World Industries section), there is nothing about Round 2 that will not impress you with either its uniqueness or its audacity. The fact that it comes from such classy skaters as Mullen and Song only serves to illustrate that this is one of skateboarding's better efforts.

This video starts off with a bang. Rodney comes out swinging with some big combos, which makes his part fun to watch again and again. I still cannot figure out how any normal human could have such perfect balance & coordination. Daewon’s part is equally impressive as he pushes his tricks to a bigger but less technical level than Rodney. There’s a lot of great skating throughout the rest of this video. Chet Thomas should be included in the title because his part is just as amazing to watch. The only downside is the video feels like a T.V. program since there are skate commercials mixed throughout the entire video. Overall, this video is a must see for any technical skateboarding fan.
