Current Rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars

Strip Mall Heroes is the smorgasbord of the Powell videos, which (for all you non-buffet types) means it has a little bit of everything. Follow the Powell team through the U.S., Canada and Europe on a documented tour that hosts numerous demos, contests, and off-duty sessions. Skateparks? Check. Pools? Roger that. Street. 10 – 4, big buddy. The video also has testimonials (can I get an Amen?) of what tour life is like. What else does a video need? Music. And this video mixes Johnny Cash to James Brown to the Minutemen.

Strip Mall Heroes is a weak attempt at a Discovery channel documentary. The video sucks. The only reason I even gave it one star is because they meant well; after all, it’s aimed at little kids. In my opinion, mini ramp skating is boring to watch, whether it’s Koston or Danny Way. The redundant back and forth looping is mundane and puts me to sleep. This is an utter flop when compared to Ban This or Public Domain. I guess sometimes even the greats fall and this is a perfect example.

The Gnarboot Cobbler November 22, 2002

The most obvious purpose of watching a skateboard video is to get you pumped up to go out and skate. Strip Mall Heroes fired me up to go out and buy a razor scooter. After all, I’ve always been told to keep an open mind towards new things. But before I got spandexed up and went out on my first hot scootering session, I sat down and reflected upon how this video turned me to the dark side. First off, the format of the video was visual diarrhea: fetid chunks of interviews, boring non-skating tour footage, and crappily-filmed skateboarding here and there. Being that the meat and potatoes of the video were already ruined, putting a soundtrack as random as James Brown and the Minutemen had the effect of playing Slayer during a TLC surgery show. So go out and get a scooter and work on those bunny hops!
