Tentacles of Destruction
Foundation
1994, 25 minutes
Current Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

This is one of the many videos in the Foundation Skateboards library. Such videos tend to be short, feature good skateboarding, and occasional bad camera work. Tentacles of Destruction is one such video, from 1994. The video features the likes of Beagle, Steve Olsen, a young Heath Kirchart, and Frank Hirata, among others. It features a varied selection of silly and ecclectic music, which seems to be a unifying thread among Foundation videos. This is one of those videos that captures skateboarding's transition from super tech to a greater focus on gnarliness and style.

Well, shit dang. This video definitely lives up to its name. It is both tentacly and destructive. These skaters kept it so real, I found myself saying, "fo’ real". The soundtrack changes with the skaters’ styles and plays a role in the vibe of this film. Afro-slinging Steve Olson opens it up with his signature style of board flipping wizardry. Lil' Stevie Berra holds it together with a super long part that showcases a wide array of his street surfing talents. I like how Frank Hirata skates hard or doesn't skate at all. He even has a rain skating session, which makes him look a bit like Rodney Mullen. At the end, there's this karaoke part that shows how some people are good at skating but suck eggs at singing.

I really like Foundation videos because of the wonderful blend of talent the team has. Steve Olson can skate any and everything, and has such a careless style. Frank Hirata also destroys everything, but with incredibly smooth style. Steve Berra still had the best backside flips and Andrew Currie can go big. Leigh Peterson's part was the only one that didn't really impress me, and in fact, it usually gets the fast forward button. He can sing Rick James' "Super Freak" really well though.
